Meaning & Symbolism
The Sanskrit word vajra means both thunderbolt and diamond. The thunderbolt strikes with irresistible force; the diamond is imagined as unbreakable and able to cut through lesser materials. Buddhist tradition joined these two images into one ritual emblem for awakened mind: powerful enough to break delusion, yet too stable to be broken by it. In Tibet the object is called a dorje, and it became one of the defining symbols of Vajrayana Buddhism.
A vajra is often paired with a bell in ritual. The vajra stands for compassionate method and decisive action, while the bell stands for wisdom. On many five-pronged forms, the outer prongs curve inward and meet around a central axis, gathering apparent opposites into a single point. The lotus below adds another layer to the story, rising clean from muddy water as an image of awakening within ordinary life.
This vertical liuli version turns a hand-held ritual implement into a small monument. The clear and frosted glass is deliberately delicate beside a symbol famous for indestructibility. That contrast gives the piece its tension: physical fragility carries an image of inner steadiness, and changing light reveals a structure designed around an unmoving center.
