Meaning & Symbolism
In Mahayana Buddhist scripture, the Medicine Buddha, Bhaishajyaguru, makes twelve great vows before attaining awakening. He promises to bring light to dark places, respond to suffering, help those without necessities, and guide confused beings toward a life of dignity and understanding. His realm is described as radiant like pure lapis lazuli, which is why his image is so often linked with deep blue.
He is commonly shown holding a medicine bowl, and the triad places Sunlight and Moonlight Bodhisattvas beside him. Day and night become companions to the central figure, suggesting care that does not stop when conditions change. The flame-shaped aureole lifts the scene beyond an ordinary seated portrait, turning it into a vision of steady attention surrounded by light.
The blue liuli glass makes this story almost architectural. Color pools in the Buddha and lotus, while the side figures and aureole catch the light in thinner layers. The plain finish feels cool and contemplative; the gilded version marks crowns, halos, and sacred details with ceremonial warmth. The triad's story offers a strong human instruction: meet suffering with knowledge, discipline, patience, and care.
Meaning for Daily Life
Choose this triad for a space centered on compassionate care and steady hope. The Medicine Buddha with Sunlight and Moonlight Bodhisattvas creates a complete visual field rather than a solitary figure, suggesting attention that continues through changing conditions. It can anchor prayers for relief from suffering, reflections on caregiving, or a daily commitment to meet vulnerability with wisdom and dignity.

Care: Dust with a soft dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, hard knocks, and rapid temperature changes. Do not polish the gilded details.
