Meaning & Symbolism

Before he was known as the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama was a prince who left the shelter of palace life after confronting old age, illness, and death. He searched for an answer through years of severe discipline, then rejected both luxury and self-punishment. At last he sat beneath the bodhi tree and resolved not to rise until he understood the cause of suffering.

Buddhist tradition tells that Mara, the embodiment of fear and delusion, sent temptations and armies to break his concentration. Siddhartha remained still and touched the earth, calling it to witness the countless acts that had brought him to that moment. When the morning star appeared, he awakened as Shakyamuni Buddha. The quiet seated figure therefore represents a victory won without violence: confusion is faced, understood, and released.

Clear crystal gives that story a vivid physical form. Light passes through the solid body, catches on the carved robe, and changes as the viewer moves. The material does not make the Buddha less substantial; it makes stillness appear luminous, like a mind becoming clear enough to see what was already there.
